Critique
Giant Schnauzer Club 23.10.22 Championship Show:
I would like to thank the club for my invitation to judge their Championship show, such an honour. My thanks to all the exhibitors that braved the weather and a massive thank you to the two best stewards a judge could possibly have wished for, Mr & Mrs. McGrann. It’s a few years since I have judged the largest member of the Schnauzer family and I was pleased with the general quality of my entry. Overall, the exhibits present on the day, were more balanced with length of foreleg in proportion to body depth, more spring of rib and the typical enthusiastic happy temperament so typical of a Schnauzer of any size. Side profile movement was nice to see with plenty of reach and drive in most. However, the rear movement told a very different story with many moving close behind and even a few with hocks crossing over.

1 Cullen. Philoma Musicman. A nice young male up to size coming up through the ranks, lovely head and expression and good length of neck to match body with a nice level top line. Good tail set, rear angles and very happy in the ring. Super coat presented and handled well.
2 Healey. Philoma Rafael. 16-month-old male, another with a lovely harsh jacket, good depth of chest on this youngster and straight front legs, I preferred the topline of my 1st place.
PGD (2,1a)
1 Watmough & Allen, Minnienoom Jazz A Matazz with Andmaura. Large boned pepper & salt male, almost square and good rear angles, a correct banded coat of good texture. Presented and handled well.
LD (5,1a)
1 Parker. Gloris Rafeal Draxpark (Imp). A male that was the desired almost square with a good depth and spring of rib down to elbows. Plenty of rear angulation and a lovely straight leg at the front. Neck into withers really flowed and a very dark eye.
2 Ellis. Dasval Little Big Man. Up to size male, longer cast male than my winner, loved his neck into withers. He has a well-made rear and moved out well. Well-presented and handled, great to see this male up on his toes.
3 Lunt. Tribune Vom Schloss Ehrenberg at Lourane.
CHAMPION DOG (3,1a)
1 Cullen. CH. Philoma One Night Only. I have had the pleasure of judging this dog previously, I liked him then and still like him today. Good head and dark eye giving the desired expression, good reach of neck into the top line which is held on the move. Good rear angulation and good coat. Moved around the ring beautifully, a real showman and at one with his handler. Very happy to award him DCC & BOS.
2 Parker. CH. Draxpark Fantasticus. Three-year-old male, on the larger side, nice top line and great depth of rib on this dog, plenty of forechest and good length of upper arm producing the desired front angle. Not as balanced as 1 and gave his handler a hard time on the day.
VD (3)
1 Houchin. CH Philoma Pay Back Time for Barnsdale ShCM ShEX. A quality class of veterans, this male is very balanced with a good head and neck into shoulders, nice top line leading to good tail set. Well sprung ribs and depth of rib with elbows well in. Still every bit a show man and loved his time in the ring. Handled and presented well, at one with the handler. Awarded RCC & BVIS.
2 Veal. CH. Philoma Man After Midnight. Another nice exhibit, All the attributes of the winner were found in this dog but he was slightly longer cast. Handled well and presented in tip top condition.
3 Watmough & Allen. Lucavale Wahington at Andmaura.
MPB (2)
1 Parker. Draxpark Girl Power. Promising six-month-old puppy, Lovely head and neck leading to the withers and top line. Almost square and good tail set, good rear angulation. Just needs time to settle into the ring, BPIS.
2 Foster. Eskaidee Fleurtini. This puppy moved out well, has a good front and good rear, also a good harsh jacket. Preferred the balance & topline of my winner. RBPIS.
JB (2,1a)
1 Clay. Philoma Lucia. Nicely made bitch, with a good dark eye, lovely length of neck and loved her depth of chest. Correct rear angles just slightly longer cast.
GB (1)
1 Price & Lowood-Price. Adreana’s Bellini. Wow, for me this bitch just oozes the breed standard. Lovely head and dark eye, correct length of neck for her length of back, correct length of foreleg for her depth of body. Love the length of upper arm and lay of shoulders together producing a super front construction. The right amount of forechest and lovely rear angulation and tail set. Almost square and so very balanced throughout. Moved out well powering around the ring with reach and drive and true going and coming. Loved the way she was up on toes the whole time. Presented and handled well. Very happy to award her BCC, and BIS.
LB (3)
1 Gillam. Echodream Going South to Philoma. This bitch presented with a fab straight harsh jacket, withers well back and a good upper arm. Chest well down to elbow and nice rear angulation. Almost square and very balanced.
2 Trafford. Treuherz Georgia. Pepper and salt bitch with good bone, good jacket, has a good topline, not the movement of my class winner.
3 Woodgate & George. Socialite Vom Schloss Mit Dasval (Imp).
OB (4)
1 Velhinho & Donley. Echodream Cleopatra. Another bitch that screams of quality and breed standard to me, again very similar in type to my BCC winner with a great head, neck and shoulder placement resulting in front legs positioned well under her. True straight legs and great rear angles. So very balanced, had good reach and drive but lost out to my BCC winner due to being less enthusiastic to move on the day. Very worthy RBCC.
2 Price & Lowood-Price. Dasval As Good As It Gets. A lot to like about this bitch, with correct construction front and rear, and correct coat. Good depth and spring of rib, slightly longer cast than winner. Good movement, another happy to be in the ring and handled well.
3 Veal. Philoma American In Paris.
CHAMPION BITCH (1)1 Cullen. CH. Philoma Leading Lady. Well made four-year-old bitch, lots to like about this girl, correct head and lovely dark eye and expression, good reach and arch of neck leading to a lovely straight topline which was held on the move. Beautifully presented and handled.
THEA JEFFERY’S MEMORIAL STAKES SPECIAL PEPPER & SALT DOG OR BITCH (4,1w/d)
1 Trafford. Treuherz Georgia.
2 Trafford. Treuherz Cydney. Good head and a good harsh jacket, correct angulation on rear and tail set, upper arm shorter than on my winner.
3 Watmough & Allen. Minninoom Jazz A Matazz with Andmaura.
